AI Engineering¶
Engineering is part of the AI Control Plane, alongside Agents and Govern.
Engineering provides the development layer that spans the entire software lifecycle — from planning and coding to testing, documentation, modernization, and CI/CD. Powered by IBM Bob and enterprise-grade integration platforms, it gives teams the tools to build new software faster, retire legacy systems systematically, and connect everything in between.
The Engineering building blocks cover four interconnected engineering capabilities:
- Agentic SDLC — an IDE-native AI partner that handles every phase of building new software, from requirements through CI/CD, so teams ship faster without sacrificing quality or governance.
- Code Modernization — AI-powered analysis and transformation of legacy Java, mainframe, IBM Z, and IBM i applications into modern cloud-native architectures, preserving business logic throughout.
- Integration as Code (iPaaS) — a cloud-native Integration Platform as a Service using webMethods Hybrid Integration, connecting SaaS applications, on-premise systems, APIs, and event streams through a low-code development model.
- Headless Bob — IBM Bob running autonomously in CI/CD pipelines, scheduled jobs, and event-driven automations, bringing agentic engineering workflows to the software delivery process itself.
Building Blocks¶
| Building Block | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Agentic SDLC | Transform software development with IBM Bob, an IDE-native agentic AI that automates the entire software development lifecycle from intent to production-ready code |
| Code Modernization | Transform legacy Java, mainframe, IBM Z, and IBM i applications into modern cloud-native systems using AI-powered analysis, automated refactoring, and systematic migration strategies |
| Integration as Code | Connect applications, systems, and data across distributed environments using webMethods Hybrid Integration — a cloud-native iPaaS supporting hybrid, API, B2B/EDI, and event-driven integration patterns |
| Headless Bob | Expose IBM Bob Shell as a REST and ACP service — run prompts asynchronously, stream live output, and integrate Bob into CI/CD pipelines, scheduled jobs, and multi-agent workflows without an IDE or developer in the loop |
